Gholamhossein Mosaheb

Iranian mathematician; founder of modern encyclopedia writing in Iran

The Iranic font, a left-slanted typeface designed to accommodate right-to-left scripts, remains a legacy of Gholamhossein Mosaheb’s technical innovations in typography. Born in Tehran in 1910, he pursued an international education across Iran, France, and England before earning his doctorate from the University of Cambridge. His career bridged the gap between formal logic and the structured preservation of Persian knowledge.

Contributions to Mathematical Logic

Mosaheb introduced the study of mathematical logic to the Iranian academic community. In 1955, he published Madkhale Manteghe Soorat, known as the Introduction to Formal Logic. This volume represented the first scholarly treatment of the subject within the country. In 1957, L. A. Zadeh reviewed the text favorably in the Journal of Symbolic Logic, solidifying its place in the field.

Institutional Foundations

He established multiple centers for scientific research and education. In October 1965, he founded the Institute of Mathematical Research (IMR) as a semi-independent entity affiliated with Tarbiat Moaalem University. He served as the director of the Institute of Mathematics at Kharazmi University from 1972 to 1974. His efforts in organizing research centers were supported by his role as a teacher and mathematician.

The Persian Encyclopedia

Mosaheb is recognized for his work as a lexicographer, specifically as the primary author of The Persian Encyclopedia. The three-volume project employed specific methods of categorization that continue to influence reference writing. While the 1996 publication credited him alongside Ahmad Aram and Mahmoud Mosahab, his foundational role in organizing the content remains central to the work's historical importance.

Legacy and Recognition

Beyond his institutional work, Mosaheb was fluent in Persian, Arabic, French, and English. On 28 June 2009, the Society for the Appreciation of Cultural Works and Dignitaries announced that its 100th published book would be a tribute to his life and research, authored by Pegah Hajjan. This volume includes articles such as The First Trigonometry Book and various appraisals from scholars including Iraj Afshar and Najaf Daryabandari.
