The introduction of Bol loops in 1937 established a specialized mathematical framework that persists in modern geometry. Gerrit Bol, a Dutch mathematician born in Amsterdam in 1906, dedicated his professional life to the study of differential geometry and complex topological structures, influencing the academic landscape of the Netherlands and Germany throughout the middle of the twentieth century.
Academic Foundations and Early Research
Bol pursued his advanced studies at Leiden University, where he completed his PhD in 1928 under the supervision of Willem van der Woude. Following his doctoral success, he achieved his habilitation in 1931. During the 1930s, his research career took him to the University of Hamburg. Working alongside Wilhelm Blaschke, Bol focused his efforts on the geometry of webs and projective differential geometry. This period proved productive, leading to the 1934 publication, Über Drei-Gewebe im vierdimensionalen Raum, which appeared in Mathematische Annalen.

Take the IQ test →Contributions to Geometry
Beyond his work on web geometry, Bol is noted for the development of Bol's conjecture regarding sextactic points. His academic output included significant collaborative efforts, most notably the 1938 text Geometrie der Gewebe, written with Wilhelm Blaschke. As his career progressed, Bol authored a series of comprehensive volumes on analytical and projective differential geometry, published between 1948 and 1967 through Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht in Göttingen. These works served to formalize specific approaches within the field of geometry.
Career Appointments and Later Years
Bol held positions at the University of Greifswald and the University of Hamburg. Following his activities in the mid-1940s, he secured a professorship at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg. He remained in this post at the University of Freiburg until his retirement in 1971. Bol continued to live in Freiburg im Breisgau until his death in 1989 at the age of 83.
