German Khan

Russian businessman

German Khan, a key figure in the transformation of the Russian energy sector, played a pivotal role in the assembly of the Alfa Group Consortium. His career tracks the development of the Russian market from small-scale wholesale trade cooperatives in the late 1980s to the monumental multi-billion dollar international energy transactions that defined the post-Soviet economic landscape.

Early Career and Alfa Group Foundations

Born in Kyiv in 1961, Khan studied mechanical engineering, graduating from the Kyiv-Pedagogical College in 1982 before specializing in steel production at the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys by 1988. Following a chance meeting with college peer Mikhail Fridman, he joined the Alfa Group Consortium. His early responsibilities at the trading arm, Alfa Eco, included managing carpet exports and navigating the volatile wholesale climate. By 1996, he was appointed president of Alfa Eco, prioritizing the development of export logistics and the oil trade.

The TNK-BP Joint Venture

In 1997, Alfa Group acquired a 40% stake in the state-owned Tyumen Oil Company (TNK). Khan joined the board of directors and served as deputy chairman until 2003. That year, he facilitated the formation of a 50-50 joint venture with BP, an $8 billion investment that created Russia's third-largest oil company. As executive director of TNK-BP Management, Khan navigated complex shareholder conflicts until the venture was sold to Rosneft in 2013 for $56 billion, marking a significant milestone in global energy acquisitions.

Global Investment through LetterOne

Following the sale of TNK-BP, Khan moved to reinvest the capital generated from the deal. He co-founded the Luxembourg-based investment firm LetterOne alongside Mikhail Fridman to target international projects. Through the creation of L1 Energy in 2013, he leveraged the expertise of high-profile energy advisors to diversify his portfolio. Despite market downturns in 2014 that saw fluctuations in his estimated net worth, the firm continued to serve as his primary vehicle for global business operations.
