Technical Contributions in Japan
Escher arrived in Japan as part of a specialized group of Dutch engineers that included Johannis de Rijke and Cornelis Johannes van Doorn. Tasked with improving public works, he focused on hydraulic systems and coastal development. His engineering efforts in the Osaka and Fukui regions addressed critical maritime and river management requirements during a period of rapid modernization for the Japanese government.

Beyond his tenure in Japan, Escher participated in exploratory missions concerning hydraulic infrastructure in China. Working alongside Johannis de Rijke, he examined the sandbank located at the mouth of the Huangpu Jiang. This tributary of the Yangtze River was essential for maintaining shipping lanes vital to international trade in Shanghai. Escher authored a technical report on these findings, which received professional notice, although the proposed works were not immediately put into practice.
Domestic Career and Personal Life
Upon returning to his home country, Escher transitioned to roles in Maastricht and Leeuwarden, where he continued to operate as a hydraulic engineer. In 1882, he married Charlotte Marie Hartitzsch, who died in 1885. He later married Sara Gleichman in 1892. Escher is the father of the graphic artist M. C. Escher and the geologist Berend George Escher. In 1903, the family relocated to Arnhem. He resided in the Hague until his death in 1939 at age 96.
