Early Discovery in Perth
Born on 3 November 1987 in Perth, Western Australia, Ward was the second of four children born to Gary and Claire Ward. Her formative education occurred at Presbyterian Ladies' College and Shenton College. In 2002, at age fourteen, she accompanied friends to an Australian modelling search. Although she did not win, a representative from Vivien's Model Agency recorded a show reel of her. This footage reached David Cunningham of the New York City agency IMG, initiating her professional career.

Ward debuted at Australian Fashion Week on 5 May 2003 at the age of fifteen. By September 2004, she became the youngest model featured on the cover of American Vogue. Her presence quickly expanded to include appearances on the covers of Vogue Paris, Vogue Japan, Teen Vogue, and the premiere issues of Vogue China and Vogue India. In 2005, she participated in over 20 runway shows in New York City and secured contracts with brands such as Calvin Klein, Valentino, and Burberry. Forbes listed her among the top-earning models in 2007 with estimated annual earnings of $3 million.
Transition to Film
Following a hiatus from the runway starting in 2008, Ward pursued a career in film acting. Her screen credits include the 2008 Australian feature The Black Balloon, the horror film The Strangers, and a role in the 2011 production Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Despite media speculation regarding her retirement during these years, she maintained her status as a working actor and model throughout the period.
