Early Career and Cross Country Success
Burka first gained attention in 2003 by securing a bronze medal in the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. By 2005, she earned the title of junior world champion in cross country. Her dominance on the circuit included three consecutive wins at the Great Edinburgh International Cross Country between 2006 and 2008.

Her performance at the 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships resulted in a gold medal in the 1500 metres. She previously set an African record for the mile in 2008 with a time of 4:18.23. Throughout her career, she maintained a strong presence at the World Championships in Athletics, competing in every edition from 2005 to 2011. She also secured a silver medal at the 2010 African Championships in Athletics and a gold at the 2007 All-Africa Games.

Burka represented Ethiopia at three Olympic Games: 2008, 2012, and 2016. While her early career focused on the 1500 metres, she later transitioned to longer distances. In 2012, she finished fifth in the 5000 metres at the London Olympics. By 2016, she competed in the 10,000 metres at the Rio Olympics, finishing eighth with a time of 30:26.66.
