Hackman moved to California to attend the Pasadena Playhouse, where he befriended Dustin Hoffman. Both were dismissed by classmates as unlikely to succeed. Relocating to New York City, Hackman supported himself with manual labor while pursuing off-Broadway roles. His breakthrough arrived with the 1964 Broadway success Any Wednesday, which facilitated his transition into film acting.
Cinematic Breakthroughs
After a notable performance in the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde, which brought his first Academy Award nomination, Hackman achieved stardom as Popeye Doyle in The French Connection, winning the 1972 Academy Award for Best Actor.
