Early Training and Institutional Foundation
Born in Moscow in 1933, Galina Borisovna Volchek completed her formal education at the Moscow Art Theatre School in 1955. Following her graduation, she joined the Sovremennik Theatre in 1956. Volchek took on the position of chief director at the Sovremennik Theatre in 1972, subsequently becoming artistic director in 1989. Over the course of her tenure, she directed more than thirty productions, interpreting a range of Russian and international classic works alongside contemporary literature. Her expertise in the pedagogy of acting led to invitations to instruct and direct in various countries, including Germany, Finland, Ireland, Hungary, and Poland.
Legislative Service
Beyond her theatrical commitments, Volchek served as a member of the 2nd State Duma of the Russian Federation between 1995 and 1999. As a deputy, she participated in the Committee on Culture, applying her background in the arts to the legislative process before concluding her term at the end of the millennium.
Recognition and Legacy
Volchek received numerous accolades for her contributions to the arts, including the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1989 and the USSR State Prize in 1967. Her decorations include the Order of the Red Banner of Labour and multiple classes of the Order For Merit to the Fatherland. Following her death in Moscow in December 2019, she was interred at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
