Rise at the Bolshoi
Her repertoire expanded across the Russian operatic canon and included roles such as Violetta, Tosca, Cio-cio-san, Leonore, and Cherubino. She performed as Tatyana in Eugene Onegin at the Finnish National Opera in 1957 and sang Liù in Turandot at La Scala in 1964.

Benjamin Britten composed the soprano role in his War Requiem specifically for her, though Soviet authorities initially blocked her travel for the premiere. She remained married to cellist Mstislav Rostropovich from 1955 until his 2007 death. Their home served as a sanctuary for Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn between 1968 and 1971. In 1974, the couple requested extended leave and departed the Soviet Union, eventually settling in France and the United States.
Later Career and Legacy
Following her 1982 farewell performance in Paris, she turned to stage direction, including Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tsar's Bride in Washington, D.C. She established the Rostropovich-Vishnevskaya Foundation in 1991 and founded the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre in Moscow in 2002. Her final creative years included appearances in Alexander Sokurov's films, notably the 2007 production Alexandra.
