García Bernal achieved early success in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s directorial debut, Amores perros, in 2000. He followed this with Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también, a film that secured his standing in international markets. Throughout the early 2000s, he portrayed notable figures, including a recurring turn as Che Guevara in both the miniseries Fidel and the film The Motorcycle Diaries. His performance in the latter earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2005.
Directing and Production Ventures
Beyond acting, he moved into production and directing. He co-founded Canana Films with Diego Luna, focusing on projects including television documentaries about violence in Ciudad Juarez. His directorial debut, Déficit, was released in 2007. In 2010, he directed and narrated a four-part short film series titled Los Invisibles, which focused on the experiences of migrants in Mexico. He also directed multiple other projects during his career, contributing to his reputation as a multi-faceted filmmaker.
