Early Career and Business
Born in 1970 in Tucson, Giffords pursued education at University High School, Scripps College, and Cornell University, where she earned a Master’s degree in Regional Planning. Her professional life began in New York City as an analyst at Price Waterhouse. In 1996, she returned to Arizona to manage El Campo Tire Warehouses, a local family business founded by her grandfather, serving as CEO until the company was sold in 2000.
Service in Arizona Legislature
Giffords entered politics as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives, serving from 2001 to 2003. She subsequently transitioned to the Arizona Senate, holding that seat until 2005. During this tenure, she focused on infrastructure, health care access, and education, earning recognition from the Mental Health Association of Arizona and the Sierra Club for her policy initiatives.

Elected to the U.S. House in 2006, Giffords served from 2007 until her resignation in 2012. Throughout her time in Washington, D.C., she maintained a moderate political stance. Her service concluded after she sustained a life-altering brain injury during a 2011 mass shooting event in Tucson. She returned to the House floor in August 2011 to a standing ovation before formally resigning in early 2012.
Advocacy and Recognition
Post-resignation, Giffords pivoted to gun control advocacy. In 2013, she and her husband, Mark Kelly, co-founded the organization now known as the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Her public contributions have been marked by significant honors, including the 2013 Profile in Courage Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022, and induction into the Arizona Women's Hall of Fame in 2025.
