Gaafar Nimeiry

Sudanese President (1931-2009)

Commanding the Khartoum Garrison on 25 May 1969, Gaafar Nimeiry led a military coup to overthrow the civilian government of Ismail al-Azhari. This action, known as the May Revolution, initiated a complex sixteen-year tenure as Sudan’s head of state, during which he drastically transformed the nation’s political, economic, and geopolitical orientation through shifting alliances.

Early Military Career

Born in Omdurman in 1931, Nimeiry received his education at the War College in Omdurman, graduating in 1952. His career was marked by frequent accusations of anti-government plotting, including suspicion regarding a 1957 coup d'état attempt. In 1966, he earned a Master of Military Science from the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Later that year, he was arrested along with 400 others following an abortive coup attempt by junior officers before returning to service as commander of the infantry school.

Consolidation of Power

Upon seizing power in 1969, Nimeiry suspended the constitution and dissolved the National Assembly, establishing the National Revolutionary Command Council with himself as chairman. Initially, he aligned with leftist ideologies, nationalizing banks and foreign-owned businesses to consolidate state authority. In 1970, he neutralized internal conservative opposition by ordering an aerial bombardment on Aba Island, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Ansar followers and their leader, Imam Al-Hadi al-Mahdi.

Geopolitical Pivots

Following a failed 1971 coup attempt supported by communists, Nimeiry purged the leftist leadership and moved Sudan away from the Soviet Union. He fostered new relationships with China and the United States while pursuing capitalist economic reforms. In 1972, he facilitated the Addis Ababa Agreement, which granted autonomy to the southern region and effectively ended the First Sudanese Civil War. His leadership also saw him serve as the chairperson of the Organisation of African Unity from 1978 to 1979.

Final Years and Ouster

In his final years, Nimeiry moved toward Islamism, aligning with the Muslim Brotherhood. He imposed Sharia law across Sudan in 1983, a decision that catalyzed the Second Sudanese Civil War. Facing a severe economic crisis and mounting civil disobedience, he was ousted from power in 1985 while on a trip to the United States. He lived in exile in Egypt before returning to Sudan in 1999, subsequently running unsuccessfully in the 2000 presidential election. He died in Khartoum in 2009.
