Francesca Michielin

Italian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist

Winning the fifth season of the Italian X Factor in 2012 launched the career of Bassano del Grappa native Francesca Michielin. Since that debut, the multi-instrumentalist has recorded five studio albums and multiple chart-topping singles, maintaining a sustained presence in the Italian music industry while diversifying into television presentation and literary authorship.

Early Musical Foundations

Born in 1995, Michielin began her formal musical training on the piano at age nine, later adding electric bass to her repertoire. Her teenage years involved performing in a local gospel choir and playing in the punk rock band Monkey Nuts. Her influences during this formative period included artists like Bon Iver, Jeff Buckley, and Damien Rice. She balanced these artistic pursuits with her studies, eventually graduating in jazz singing with honours from the Conservatory Agostino Steffani in Castelfranco Veneto in 2022.

Breakthrough and Early Recordings

Following her success on X Factor, where she performed covers of Adele, The Doors, and Stevie Wonder, Michielin released her winning single, "Distratto." The track reached number one on the Italian Singles Chart. Her debut studio album, Riflessi di me, followed in 2012. She subsequently established a productive collaboration with rapper Fedez, featuring on the commercially successful tracks "Cigno nero" and "Magnifico," the latter of which achieved triple platinum certification in Italy.

Mainstream Success and Festival Performances

Michielin has competed three times in the Sanremo Music Festival, placing second in 2016 with "Nessun grado di separazione" and in 2021 alongside Fedez with "Chiamami per nome," while placing 21st in 2025 with "Fango in paradiso." Her discography includes the albums di20, 2640, and the 2020 project Feat (stato di natura). In 2016, she represented Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Professional Expansion

Beyond her primary work as a singer-songwriter, Michielin has expanded her professional activities to include music production and television. She has collaborated with artists including Måneskin, Elisa, and Emma Marrone. In 2022, she debuted as a novelist with the book Il cuore è un organo and assumed the role of host for the docu-series Effetto serra and subsequent seasons of X Factor.
