Francesco Bellavista Caltagirone established his independent business career in 1962 at age 23, following an initial period working within his family’s real estate firm. Descended from a line of Sicilian property developers dating back to the nineteenth century, he emerged as a prominent figure in the Italian construction sector before expanding his operations into international markets.

Early Career and International Expansion

Between 1962 and 1979, Caltagirone concentrated his activities within Italy, completing approximately 500 real estate operations. He shifted his focus internationally throughout the 1980s, executing projects across the United States, Canada, Venezuela, and Brazil. In 1984, he co-founded the Monaco-based construction firm ENGECO S.A.M. alongside Stefano Casiraghi.

Acqua Marcia Group Leadership

In 1994, he acquired the Società dell’Acqua Pia Antica Marcia, a historic entity originally established in 1868. Under his direction, the company diversified into various sectors, including seaport operations, airport management, and hotel development. The firm oversaw approximately 1,000 real estate projects throughout Italy. Specifically, the tourism division focused on restoring historic properties, such as the Grand Hotel Villa Igiea in Palermo and the Hilton Molino Stucky in Venice, converting them into luxury hotel facilities.

Aviation and Directorships

Caltagirone participated in the aviation industry through ATA Handling and Ali Trasporti Aerei, which provided commercial services and management for Linate airport. He served as a shareholder of Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. and held a position on the Board of Directors of Alitalia between 2009 and 2012. Additionally, he maintained board membership at the Banca Popolare di Roma and engaged with environmental efforts through the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

Professional Recognition

Academic and philanthropic institutions acknowledged his management contributions during the 2000s. In 2005, he received the Pigna d’Argento award. In 2007, ISIDA and Banco di Sicilia granted him a Master Honoris Causa in Management. He was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit by the Italian Red Cross in 2008 for charitable donations. In 2009, the University of Catania conferred a Degree Honoris Causa upon him for his work in business governance, and he also received honors from the Royal House of Savoy.
