European Development and Deportivo
After a season with Ajax reserves in 2004, Filipe Luís moved to Spain. He spent time with the Real Madrid B team before joining Deportivo La Coruña in 2006. He secured a regular starting position during the 2007-08 season following the departure of Joan Capdevila. During his tenure at Deportivo, he notably played every minute of every league match in the 2008-09 season. Despite a serious right fibula injury sustained in January 2010, he returned to action within four months.

Filipe Luís joined Atlético Madrid in 2010 for a fee estimated between €12 and €13.5 million. He played a significant role in the 2013-14 campaign, helping the club secure its first league title in 18 years. He appeared in the 2014 Champions League final and was recognized as one of the best defenders in the Spanish League. He returned to the club in 2015 for a second spell, adding the Europa League and Super Cup to his collection in 2018.
Premier League and International Career
In July 2014, Chelsea signed Filipe Luís for £15.8 million. His time in London included winning the Premier League title and the League Cup. He made his international debut for Brazil in 2009 and went on to earn over 40 caps. He represented his country at the 2013 Confederations Cup, the 2018 World Cup, and three editions of the Copa América, winning both the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2019 Copa América.
Retirement and Coaching
Filipe Luís announced his retirement from professional playing on 30 November 2023. Following his departure from the pitch, he transitioned into a coaching career. He currently serves as the head coach of the Ligue 1 club Monaco.
