Born in 1844 in Cologne, Mülhens assumed management of the perfume factory established by his grandfather, Wilhelm Mülhens. The enterprise operated under the 4711 brand, becoming a significant commercial entity in the German market. His leadership secured recognition for the business, including an imperial warrant that designated him as a purveyor to the imperial and royal court situated in Vienna.

Beyond the fragrance industry, Mülhens diversified his commercial interests into regional infrastructure. Between 1912 and 1914, he financed the creation of Hotel Petersberg near Bonn. This facility transitioned in later years to serve as the Guest House for the Federal Government of Germany. Additionally, beginning in 1913, he held ownership of the Drachenfelsbahn, a mountain railway line serving the North Rhine-Westphalia region.
Civic Recognition and Death
Mülhens maintained his base of operations in Königswinter, where he was recognized for his economic contributions. In 1922, the local municipality bestowed upon him the title of honorary citizen. He resided in the area until his death on January 15, 1928, at the age of 84. His remains were interred at the Friedhof Am Palastweiher.
