Frederiksborg Castle underwent a major reconstruction between 1860 and 1884 under the direction of Ferdinand Meldahl following a destructive fire in 1859. This project remains a central component of his legacy within the Kingdom of Denmark, where he practiced as both an architect and a politician during a transformative period for urban and structural design.
Early Development and Training
Born in 1827 at Frederiksberg, Meldahl was the son of architect Heinrich Meldahl. His initial professional foundation included practical work within his father's iron foundry and technical training as a bricklayer. He subsequently enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts to formalize his architectural studies. His education was supplemented by extensive travel, with research trips conducted throughout Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, England, Egypt, and Syria.

Meldahl maintained a long-term affiliation with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He became a member in 1857, assumed a professorship in 1863, and served as the institution's manager from 1873 until 1890. Beyond his academic duties, he held the position of Vice President of the Danish Royal Academy of Arts and acted as Chamberlain to King Christian IX of Denmark.
Public Service and Architecture
For 27 years starting in 1866, Meldahl served on the municipal council of Copenhagen. His influence on the city's development coincided with his creation of various structural works. Notable designs include the Old Town Hall in Fredericia, completed in 1859, and the Alþingishúsið in Reykjavík, built between 1880 and 1881. He also contributed to the completion of Frederik's Church in Copenhagen from 1878 to 1894 and designed Alnarp Castle.
Honours and Legacy
Throughout his career, Meldahl received numerous decorations. These included being named a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1861, receiving the Cross of Honour of the Dannebrog in 1864, and achieving the rank of Commander of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1874. In 1904, he was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order. Meldahl died in 1908 in Copenhagen and is buried at Lyngby Old Churchyard.
