Fábio Aurélio

Brazilian association football player

Fábio Aurélio made his senior professional football debut for São Paulo in 1997 at the age of seventeen, marking the start of a career that spanned top-tier leagues in Brazil, Spain, and England. Known for his versatility as a left-back and left-winger, he competed at international levels including the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Early Career and Move to Europe

An academy product of São Paulo, Aurélio spent his formative professional years in Brazil. His performance in the Campeonato Paulista—where he secured championships in 1998 and 2000—caught the attention of European clubs. Following the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he signed a six-year contract with Valencia. Under manager Rafael Benítez, he became a central figure in the 2001–02 La Liga title-winning squad, the club's first since 1971. During the 2003–04 season, he helped the team secure both another La Liga title and the UEFA Cup.

The Liverpool Years

In July 2006, Aurélio joined Liverpool on a free transfer, becoming the first Brazilian to represent the club. He chose the move to reunite with Rafael Benítez. His tenure was characterized by tactical contributions, including notable assists against Arsenal and significant free-kick goals against Portsmouth and Manchester United. Despite establishing himself as the primary left-back, his time at Anfield was frequently disrupted by injuries, including an achilles tendon rupture and adductor issues. He departed in 2012 following the expiration of his contract.

Return to Brazil

In May 2012, Aurélio moved back to Brazil to join Grêmio at the request of manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo. His return to domestic football proved difficult due to a torn cruciate ligament, which resulted in an eight-month recovery period. He concluded his playing tenure after making five appearances for the club.
