The career of Ezer Weizman spanned decades of military leadership and political maneuvering, culminating in his service as the seventh president of Israel from 1993 to 2000. Born in Tel Aviv in 1924, he progressed from a British Army driver and pilot to a key figure in the defense establishment and, ultimately, the head of state.
Early Military Service
Weizman enlisted in the British Army in 1942, later transferring to the Royal Air Force in 1943. He received training in Rhodesia and served in Egypt and India. Following his service, he attended the Hebrew Reali School and later studied aeronautics in England. He was also a member of the Irgun underground from 1944 to 1946.

After the formation of the State of Israel, he joined the Israel Defense Forces, holding roles such as Chief of Operations on the General Staff. He commanded the Israeli Air Force between 1958 and 1966. In 1967, he directed air operations that achieved total air superiority on the first day of the Six-Day War. He retired from military service in 1969 as an aluf, or major general.
Political Transition and Defense Ministry
Weizman entered politics with the Gahal party, later serving as Minister of Transportation. In 1977, he was appointed Minister of Defense under Menachem Begin. During this period, he facilitated diplomatic relations with Egypt, speaking Arabic and working closely with Anwar Sadat. He resigned from the government in 1980, later establishing the Yahad party and serving as Minister for Arab Affairs and Minister of Science and Technology.
Presidency and Later Life
Elected president in 1993, Weizman held the office until 2000, having been re-elected in 1998. His term included efforts to promote the peace process, including meetings with Yasser Arafat. A financial controversy involving unreported funds from businessmen emerged in 1999, prompting his resignation. He died in 2005 at his home in Caesarea and was buried in Or Akiva.
