The Olympic Revival

Influenced by the work of Panagiotis Soutsos, Zappas proposed the revival of the ancient Olympic Games in 1856. Despite political opposition that favored agricultural and industrial exhibitions over athletics, Zappas provided the necessary funding to establish an Olympic Trust Fund. This support led to the first modern Olympic Games held in an Athens city square on 15 November 1859.

Philanthropic Impact

Zappas directed his wealth toward national development and education. He acted as a major financial supporter of the Romanian Academy, contributing to historical research and dictionary projects. Additionally, he funded the publication of Albanian newspapers and books. His legacy included instructions for the Zappeion, a facility designed to host exhibitions and conferences, which remains a landmark in his honor.
