She pushed to go further, and was held back. "I actually wanted to start when I was seven," she said of university. "But my mum was like, 'you're too young, calm down.'" Efe made her wait until ten. In January of that year Esther enrolled at the Open University, Britain's distance-learning institution, to read mathematics — and promptly became the top student in her cohort of first-years, most of them adults, scoring 100% on her first assessment.
Her enthusiasm was for the material rather than the milestone. "It's so interesting," she said of the course. "It has the type of maths I love. It's real maths — theories, complex numbers, all that stuff." The distinction she draws there — between arithmetic and *real maths* — is one many undergraduates never articulate.
PhD at Thirteen, a Bank at Fifteen
The plan she laid out at ten was specific and unembarrassed. "I want to [finish the course] in two years. Then I'm going to do my PhD in financial maths when I'm 13," she said. And after that: "I want to have my own bank by the time I'm 15 because I like numbers and I like people and banking is a great way to help people."
Meanwhile she was writing *Yummy Yummy Algebra*, a projected four-volume series of mathematics workbooks for children — an attempt to package the method that had worked on her. The family was also raising a second prodigy: her brother Isaiah, aged six, was preparing to sit his first A-level, and planning to establish the Shakespeare Academy, a nursery and primary school in Nigeria's Delta region.
Why Esther Is Called a Genius
The headlines settled on "maths genius" almost immediately, and the specific quality that justifies some version of the label is speed of abstraction. Algebra at four and quadratics shortly after are not memorisation feats; they require holding a symbol as a stand-in for an unknown quantity, which is a genuine conceptual leap that most children cannot make until eleven or twelve.
