A machine factory founded in 1859 by Ernst Fürst von Waldstein-Wartenberg became the cornerstone of the industrial empire developed by Emil Škoda after he purchased the facility in 1869. Located in Plzeň, this operation transformed from a local plant into a significant manufacturing hub that underpinned major transportation and military advancements within Cisleithania.
Academic Foundation
The technical training of Emil Škoda commenced at the Polytechnic Institute in Prague, where he studied mechanical engineering for four semesters. He later completed his formal education at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. These academic institutions provided the technical expertise required for his transition from a student into a professional engineer and eventually an industrialist.

Take the IQ test →Industrial Expansion
In 1866, Škoda secured a position as the chief engineer at the Waldstein-Wartenberg factory. After acquiring the company three years later, he focused on systematic growth. His infrastructural improvements included the construction of a railway connection to the facility in 1886. By 1890, the production capacity shifted toward heavy industry with the addition of an arms factory designed to supply machine guns to the Austro-Hungarian Army.
Corporate Consolidation
By the late 19th century, the scale of his industrial holdings necessitated a formal corporate structure. In 1899, he incorporated his various assets as the Škoda Works. This move established the predecessor to modern entities such as Škoda Auto and Škoda Transportation. During this same year, his public standing was acknowledged through his appointment as a member of the House of Lords in Austria.
