Paris-born mathematician Ely Yissachar Merzbach arrived in Israel at age 17, subsequently building a prolific academic career focused on stochastic geometry and measure theory. Since receiving his doctorate in 1979, he has held key faculty positions at Bar-Ilan University and influenced the structural development of departments within several major Israeli institutions.
Academic Foundation and Early Training
Born in 1950, Merzbach attended École Yabné in Paris before moving to Israel. His initial period in the country included studies at Yeshivat Be'er Ya'akov and service in the Nahal Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces. His formal mathematical training began at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he earned a B.Sc. in mathematics and statistics alongside an M.Sc. in mathematics. He concluded his doctoral studies in 1979 at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

Following postdoctoral work at Paris 6 and the École Polytechnique, Merzbach joined the faculty at Bar-Ilan University in 1980. He attained the rank of full professor in 1993. His research output centers on point processes theory, stochastic geometry, and measure theory. Beyond his core mathematics contributions, his scholarly interests extend to the intersection of science, religion, and the Hebrew calendar, as well as connections to the Gonda Brain Research Center.
Institutional Leadership
Merzbach has occupied several administrative roles throughout his career. In 1991, he became the head of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Bar-Ilan University. Between 1996 and 1997, he acted as the academic head of Ariel University. In 1997, he was appointed dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences at Bar-Ilan. In 2022, he received the Katz Award in recognition of his professional contributions.
