Ellef Ringnes co-founded the Ringnes & Compani brewery in 1876, marking the entry of the eighth major brewing operation into Christiania. His career transitioned from a young travelling salesman for Christiania Bryggeri into a significant industrial presence in Norway. Throughout his lifetime, he leveraged his business success to influence national infrastructure, scientific exploration, and the development of the Holmenkollen district.
Founding and Business Growth
Born in 1842 at the Ringnes farm in Krødsherad, Ringnes began his career path at age 18. By 1876, he partnered with his brother, Amund Ringnes, and the businessman Axel Heiberg to establish their brewery. The enterprise expanded its operations under the name Ringnes Bryggeri. By 1901, the management shifted as his brother-in-law, Harald Sigvart Maartmann, took over the role of managing director. This position eventually passed to Knud Maartmann Ringnes in 1920.

Ringnes utilized his capital to support large-scale public projects, specifically the Holmenkollen Line. He held a position on the board of the Holmenkolbanen light rail company from 1896 until 1906, overseeing the development of the transit line and local sanatoriums. Furthermore, he acted as a financial backer for significant polar endeavors, including the Fram expeditions led by Fridtjof Nansen and Otto Sverdrup. In acknowledgment of this support, Sverdrup named two islands after the brothers: Ellef Ringnes Island and Amund Ringnes Island.
Social Standing and Honours
His influence extended into the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, where he became a member in 1896. He maintained significant properties, including his home near St. Hanshaugen Park and the Ringnes farm, which he acquired from his brother in 1896. These locations served as centers for social gatherings. Throughout his life, he received multiple recognitions, notably his appointment as Commander of the Order of St. Olav and as a Commander of the Legion of Honour.
