6.8 million tree seedlings have been planted in Kenya under the oversight of the Green Generation Initiative. Founded by Elizabeth Wathuti, this organization promotes environmental consciousness among children and young people. Her work connects the practical realities of reforestation with the global discourse surrounding climate justice, specifically targeting the impact of environmental damage on vulnerable communities.
Foundations of Activism
Born in Nyeri on August 1, 1995, Wathuti grew up in a region recognized for its high forest cover. Her engagement with ecological conservation began at the age of seven when she planted her first tree. During her secondary education, she worked with her geography teacher to establish an environmental club, later transitioning into leadership within the Kenyatta University Environmental Club. She eventually earned a bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies and Community Development from Kenyatta University.

Take the IQ test →The Green Generation Initiative
Wathuti established the Green Generation Initiative in 2016 to foster climate resilience and provide environmental education in schools. The organization coordinates tree-planting activities and cleanup efforts designed to engage younger generations. Beyond local action, she has participated in several UN Conferences of the Parties. She has frequently noted that the technical jargon and acronyms prevalent at these international summits create significant barriers for younger participants trying to engage with climate policy.
Climate Advocacy and Recognition
Her advocacy focuses on the concept of loss and damage, arguing that wealthier nations must provide financial support to regions bearing the brunt of the climate crisis. This work earned her inclusion by Greenpeace in 2019 alongside activists Vanessa Nakate and Oladuso Adenike. Her contributions have been recognized through multiple honors, including the Wangari Maathai Scholarship, the Africa Green Person of the Year Award, and the Diana International Award. She is also a member of the Green Belt Movement.
