Elitsa Yankova

Bulgarian female wrestler

A bronze medal in the 48 kg freestyle wrestling category at the 2016 Summer Olympics marked the first podium finish for Bulgaria during those games. This achievement elevated Elitsa Yankova to national prominence, establishing her position as a representative of her country on the global wrestling circuit after she shifted her focus from track and field sprinting.

Early Development and Training

Born in 1994 in Varna, Yankova initially pursued ambitions in track and field as a short-distance runner. Her transition to freestyle wrestling was influenced by her father, Atanas Yankov, a former Greco-Roman wrestler. In 2009, while attempting to qualify for the European Championships, her performance attracted the attention of coach Petar Kasabov. Under his guidance, she began training with the Levski sports club, a move that proved foundational for her subsequent career progression.
