The Minerva School in Prague became the first gymnasium for girls in the Austro-Hungarian Empire when it opened in 1890. This institution emerged from the efforts of Eliška Krásnohorská, who spent decades working as an editor, teacher, and translator to advance the educational and literary landscape for women within the region.
Literary Contributions and Libretti
Krásnohorská authored a diverse range of materials, spanning lyric poetry, prose, and literary criticism. She is recognized for her translations between English, Russian, Polish, and Czech. Her involvement in musical theater is marked by her collaboration with Bedřich Smetana, for whom she drafted the libretti for four operas: The Kiss, The Secret, The Devil's Wall, and Viola. Additionally, she provided the libretto for the opera Blaník, composed by Zdeněk Fibich.

Introduced to the concepts of feminism and literature by Karolína Světlá, Krásnohorská established a career as a public intellectual. In 1873, she founded the periodical Ženské listy. She maintained control over the publication as its editor until 1912, at which point she transferred editorial duties to Jindřiška Flajšhansová. Her professional activities also included teaching, literary criticism, and editing.
Historical Context and Legacy
Living from 1847 until 1926, Krásnohorská navigated the political shifts of the Austrian Empire, Austria–Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. Throughout her life, she worked as a writer and pedagogue, eventually passing away in New Town. Her remains are interred at Olšany Cemetery. Her career reflects the broader nineteenth-century shift toward mass literacy and the expansion of secondary education opportunities for women.
