Educational Foundations

Before establishing a professional career in writing and film, Kurniawan studied philosophy at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. Literary Recognition

Kurniawan achieved international prominence with his novel Beauty Is a Wound, which appeared on the 100 notable books list published by The New York Times. His narrative technique often draws comparisons to authors like Gabriel García Márquez and Haruki Murakami. In 2016, he reached a significant milestone by becoming the first Indonesian writer nominated for the Man Booker International Prize.

Collaborative Projects

Beyond prose, Kurniawan is active in the film industry as a screenwriter. In 2016, Palari Films initiated an adaptation of his book Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash. Kurniawan co-wrote the screenplay for this project with director Edwin, contributing to the film's 2021 release. He also participated in various industry events, including the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in 2022 and 2023, and IdeaFest 2022.
