Early Development and Athletics Background
Born on 21 March 1982 in Chefe, located within the Arsi Zone of the Oromia Region, Dibaba emerged from a highly athletic family environment. She is the third of six children. Her household produced several prominent international competitors, including her younger sisters Tirunesh and Genzebe, as well as her cousin, Derartu Tulu, a two-time Olympic gold medallist.

Dibaba achieved significant success in international competitions during the early 2000s. She secured gold in the 10,000 metres at both the 2003 Afro-Asian Games and the All-Africa Games. Her performance at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics yielded bronze medals in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres. Throughout this period, she maintained high rankings, including a personal best of 14:32.74 in the 5,000 metres set in Bergen in 2004, and a 10,000 metres time of 30:18.39 achieved in Sollentuna in 2005.
Transition to Marathon Running
As her career progressed, Dibaba expanded her range to include the marathon distance. In 2011, she debuted at the Chicago Marathon, finishing with a time of 2:22:09. This performance earned her victory over Kayoko Fukushi by a margin of 2 minutes and 29 seconds. At the time of the event, this finish stood as the third-fastest marathon debut in history. Prior to this transition, she also competed in various road races, such as the 2010 Memorial Peppe Greco 7 km event, where she placed second behind Sylvia Kibet.
