In May 1981, he partnered with Ukrainian cosmonaut Leonid Popov for a mission launched via the Soyuz 40 spacecraft. During their time on the Salyut 6 station, the pair performed essential research on space radiation and technology. This mission solidified his status as a pivotal figure in the history of Romanian space exploration.
Diplomacy and Space Governance
Prunariu transitioned into high-level administrative roles following his service in the Romanian Air Force, where he attained the rank of major general. He served as Romania's Ambassador to the Russian Federation between 2004 and 2005. His expertise has been utilized extensively within the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, where he served as Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee and later as Chairman of the full committee.
