Early Business and Education
Born in 1835 in Ermoupolis, Vikelas spent his formative years moving between Greece, Istanbul, and Odessa. In 1852, he settled in London to work for his uncles' firm, Melas Bros, eventually advancing to a partnership. While managing commercial duties, he enrolled at University College London, the city's only institution at the time that did not mandate Anglican affiliation, where he earned a degree in botany.

Vikelas utilized his time in Britain to influence international perspectives on Greek affairs. He actively supported the provisional government during the 1863 political transition and campaigned for the Cretan cause during the 1866–1869 revolt. His literary output was extensive, ranging from an 1862 poetry anthology to an 1874 essay titled On the Byzantines, which aimed to restore the historical reputation of the Byzantine Empire.
Transition to Paris and Olympic Leadership
Following the dissolution of his business in 1876, Vikelas focused exclusively on writing and translation, notably producing Greek versions of Shakespearean plays including King Lear and Macbeth. His residence in Paris facilitated his involvement in the 1894 congress organized by Pierre de Coubertin. Tasked with leading the organizing committee for the 1896 Athens Games, he resigned his IOC presidency once the event concluded.
