Dimitris Salpingidis

Greek footballer

Dimitris Salpingidis debuted for PAOK on 30 September 1999, scoring against Lokomotivi Tbilisi in a 2–0 victory. Originally a practitioner of Greco-Roman wrestling with ambitions of Olympic competition, he pivoted to football, eventually becoming a fixture of the Greek Super League and a consistent presence in European club competitions throughout his professional career.

Early Development and Loans

Rising through the youth ranks of PAOK, Salpingidis gained essential competitive experience during two consecutive seasons on loan at Kavala. There, he distinguished himself as the Second Division top scorer. Upon returning to Thessaloniki, he quickly integrated into the first team, debuting in league play against Panathinaikos on 25 August 2002. Despite initially playing out of position as a right midfielder, his performance levels secured him a regular spot in the starting lineup.

Leadership at PAOK

By the age of 21, Salpingidis assumed the role of captain for PAOK during a period of financial instability for the club. He anchored the squad during the 2003–04 season, helping them secure third place and entry into the Champions League. His scoring prowess continued to develop, culminating in him becoming the league's top scorer during the 2005–06 campaign with 17 goals.

Move to Panathinaikos

In August 2006, Salpingidis completed a transfer to Panathinaikos in a deal valued at approximately €5 million, which included a direct fee of €1.8 million and three additional players sent to PAOK. The move generated significant controversy among PAOK supporters. During his four-year tenure with the greens, he contributed to the successful 2009–10 Greek championship campaign.

Return and European Milestones

Salpingidis returned to PAOK in 2010, signing a four-year contract. In January 2011, he recorded his 100th Greek Super League goal.
