Formative Years and Education
Born on 11 February 1927 in Călacea, Dimitrie D. Stancu experienced a difficult early life following the death of his father. At the age of 10, he relocated to Arad, entering an orphanage before finding placement with a new family. His secondary education took place at the Moise Nicoară National College. In 1947, he began studies at the Victor Babeș University in Cluj, where he worked under the supervision of Tiberiu Popoviciu. He graduated in 1951 and earned his PhD in 1956.

Stancu joined the Department of Mathematical Analysis at Babeș University immediately following his graduation. His expertise in numerical analysis led to a research appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison between 1961 and 1962, working within a department led by Preston C. Hammer. Upon returning to Romania, he was appointed full professor of the Numerical and Statistical Calculus Chair at Babeș-Bolyai University. He remained with the institution until his retirement in 1997.
Institutional Recognition
Beyond his departmental responsibilities, Stancu contributed to the broader scientific community. He served on the Scientific Council of the Institute from 1990 until 2014. In 1999, the Romanian Academy elected him as an honorary member. Additional recognition included the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Sibiu and the North University of Baia Mare. He spent his final years in Cluj-Napoca, where he passed away on 17 April 2014.
