Drogba spent his childhood moving between Ivory Coast and France, residing with his uncle Michel Goba. His formal training began relatively late, as he did not enter a dedicated football academy during his youth. After studying accountancy at university, he signed his first professional contract with Le Mans in 1999. Following four seasons in Ligue 2, he transferred to Guingamp in 2002. His performance there, which included 17 goals in 34 appearances during the 2002–03 season, earned him a move to Olympique de Marseille for £3.3 million.

In 2004, Chelsea signed the striker for £24 million. He became central to the club's success, winning league titles and securing the Premier League Golden Boot in 2007 and 2010. By 2012, he had scored in four separate FA Cup finals. Internationally, he captained the Ivory Coast national team, leading them to their first FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006. He retired from international play in 2014 as the nation's all-time leading scorer with 65 goals.
