Early Acting Career
Fletcher received his training at the Anna Scher Theatre and Fortismere School. His professional trajectory as a child actor included parts in Bugsy Malone in 1976 and various British productions during the 1980s such as The Elephant Man, The Long Good Friday, and The Bounty. By 1987, he appeared in Lionheart, and in 1988, he earned the Stars de Demain prize at the Geneva Cineme Fête for his performance in The Raggedy Rawney. His stage experience included a role as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream at Glyndebourne Opera in 1981.

Television work occupied a significant portion of his professional life. He gained recognition as Spike Thomson in the series Press Gang and appeared in the HBO drama Band of Brothers. Other television contributions include roles in Hotel Babylon, Murder Most Horrid, Misfits, and the BBC historical drama The Virgin Queen. Beyond acting, he provided voice work for McDonald’s advertisements, audiobooks, and various documentaries for the Discovery Channel and BBC.
Transition to Directing
Fletcher shifted his focus toward film direction with his 2012 debut, Wild Bill, which he co-wrote. He followed this with the musical Sunshine on Leith in 2013 and the biographical film Eddie the Eagle in 2015. He later took over directing duties for the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, released in 2018, for which he received an executive producer credit. In 2019, he directed the Elton John biography Rocketman, and in 2023, he released the feature film Ghosted for Apple TV+.
Personal and Professional Honors
A dual citizen of the United Kingdom and Lithuania, Fletcher received his Lithuanian citizenship for his efforts in promoting the nation's cultural affairs. In 1997, he married director Dalia Ibelhauptaitė in Westminster. In recognition of his contributions to the film and television industry, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2026 Birthday Honours.
