Early Education and Career
Born in Kinnigoli, Karnataka, Shetty was the eighth of nine children. His interest in cardiology emerged during his school years, spurred by news of Christiaan Barnard’s world-first heart transplant. He attended St. Aloysius High School in Mangalore before obtaining his MBBS in 1979 and completing postgraduate training in general surgery at Kasturba Medical College. He later earned his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons and completed advanced cardiothoracic training at Guy’s Hospital in London. In 1989, he returned to India, eventually performing the country's first neonatal heart surgery on a 21-day-old infant in 1992.

Shetty founded Narayana Hrudayalaya in 2001 on the outskirts of Bangalore, envisioning a network of hospitals capable of extreme economies of scale. His management philosophy prioritizes cost reduction by utilizing cross-ventilation over air conditioning and eliminating unnecessary pre-operative testing. By training families to assist in post-surgical care, his facilities achieve high daily surgery rates—often 30 to 35 procedures—which significantly lowers the cost of coronary bypass surgery. He intends to expand this model to 30,000 beds across India, Africa, and parts of Asia.
Public Policy and Innovation
Beyond hospital management, Shetty helped design Yeshasvini, a low-cost health insurance program providing coverage for four million farmers in Karnataka. He has secured agreements for medical infrastructure expansion with government bodies in Gujarat and collaborated with international organizations, such as Ascension Health, to establish medical centers including a planned facility in the Cayman Islands.
