Dele Momodu

Nigerian journalist/publisher, businessman, and motivational speaker

Born in Ile Ife in 1960, Dele Momodu transformed his career from a staff writer into a publisher of one of Africa’s most visible celebrity magazines, Ovation International. A former political exile and active journalist, he built a media portfolio that spans print, television, and digital platforms while maintaining a persistent presence in Nigeria’s national political discourse.

Journalism and Early Career

Momodu graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1982 with a degree in Yoruba, later earning a master's degree in English Literature. His media career began in 1988 as a staff writer for African Concord magazine. By 1990, he served as the editor of Classique magazine, where he became one of Nigeria's highest-paid editors. Following a brief period in bread distribution and public relations, he founded Ovation International in 1996.

Political Exile and Return

In 1993, Momodu joined the presidential campaign of Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. Following the annulment of the June 12 election, he faced arrest and treason charges under the administration of Sani Abacha. He fled Nigeria via the Seme border, passing through Cotonou, Togo, and Ghana before reaching the United Kingdom. He spent three years in exile before returning to Nigeria after the death of both Abiola and Abacha.

Media Expansion and Public Events

Ovation International evolved into a bilingual publication printed in English and French. Momodu expanded his media reach in 2015 by launching Ovation TV and The Boss Newspaper. Since 2008, he has hosted the annual Ovation Red Carol, a December event featuring music, fashion, and awards. Held in cities including Lagos and Accra, the event has featured performances by artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido.

Columns and Recognition

Momodu writes a weekly back-page column for ThisDay newspaper titled "Pendulum," focusing on national issues and current events. In 2016, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Professional Studies, Accra, granting him the title of Doctor of Humane Letters. He also previously declared his intention to contest the Nigerian presidential election in 2011 under the Labour Party.
