Dejan Stanković holds the distinct achievement of being the only athlete to represent three differently named nations—Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro, and Serbia—at FIFA World Cup tournaments. Early Development at Red Star
Born in 1978 in Belgrade, Stanković began playing football for FK Teleoptik in the Zemun municipality. At age 14, he joined the Red Star Belgrade youth system, coached by Vladimir Petrović. He made his senior team debut on 11 February 1995 against OFK Beograd under Ljupko Petrović, becoming the club's youngest debutant. He soon established himself as a regular, scoring his first goal against Budućnost Podgorica. By the 1997–98 season, he served as the club's youngest captain at age 19, leading the squad to two domestic cup victories.

Stanković transferred to Lazio in the summer of 1998 for ₤24 million. He debuted on 13 September 1998 against Piacenza. During his tenure, he played alongside Pavel Nedvěd, Juan Sebastián Verón, and Diego Simeone, earning the nickname Il Dragone. His trophy collection at Lazio included the 1999–2000 Serie A title, the 1999–2000 Coppa Italia, two Supercoppa Italiana titles, the 1998–99 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and the 1999 UEFA Super Cup.
Tenure at Inter Milan
In February 2004, Stanković joined Inter Milan in a deal worth €4 million. He debuted against Siena that same month. Known for his technical ability, he scored directly from a corner kick against Milan on 21 February 2004. He remained with Inter through several coaching changes, including the arrivals of Roberto Mancini and José Mourinho. In October 2008, he ended a goal drought by scoring against Roma. He retired from professional play in 2013.
International Career and Management
Stanković was a mainstay for his national team, eventually serving as captain from 2007 until his retirement from international competition in 2011. Following his active playing career, he transitioned into coaching. He most recently served as the head coach of the Serbian Super League club Red Star Belgrade.
