Early Comics and Graphic Novels
McKean began his career in 1986 following a visit to New York City, where he secured work with major publishers including Marvel, DC, and Continuity Comics. His collaboration with Neil Gaiman started with 1987’s Violent Cases. By 1989, he illustrated the critically acclaimed Batman graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, written by Grant Morrison, which sold over 260,000 copies. Between 1989 and 1997, he provided covers for The Sandman series, later collected in the volume Dustcovers: The Collected Sandman Covers.

The artist has maintained a prolific partnership with writers such as Neil Gaiman, David Almond, and S. F. Said. Beyond graphic novels like Cages and Celluloid, he provided illustrations for children’s books, including The Wolves in the Walls and The Graveyard Book. In 2011, he collaborated with Richard Dawkins on The Magic of Reality. Additionally, his work with Heston Blumenthal on The Fat Duck Cookbook and Historical Heston garnered multiple James Beard Foundation Awards, solidifying his role as Director of Story at The Fat Duck.
Film and Photography
McKean’s film career includes directing shorts such as The Week Before and Neon, which featured the narration of John Cale. His feature film debut, MirrorMask, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005. His photography output includes five published books, ranging from A Small Book of Black and White Lies to the 2022 release, Prompt: Conversations with Artificial Intelligence. He has also designed festival posters for Raindance and Telluride and created imagery for the Royal Mail’s 2009 Mythical Creatures collection.
