Dave Matthews

American singer-songwriter (born 1967)

The Dave Matthews Band launched its touring career in 1991 at a Charlottesville, Virginia nightclub, eventually becoming the highest-grossing act in North America between 2000 and 2009. Frontman Dave Matthews, a multi-instrumentalist who spent his youth moving between South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, defined a genre-blending sound that earned him two Grammy Awards.

Formative Years and Migration

Born in Johannesburg in 1967, Matthews was the son of a physicist who worked for IBM. His family relocated frequently, residing in Yorktown Heights, New York, and Cambridge, England, before returning to South Africa in 1977. Matthews became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1980. After finishing secondary school in 1985, he moved to the United States to avoid mandatory military conscription in South Africa. He eventually settled in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he worked as a bartender at Miller's and immersed himself in the local music scene.
