Daniel Johns

Daniel Paul Johns, a native of Newcastle, New South Wales, emerged as a central figure in Australian rock during the mid-1990s. Beyond his primary contributions as the guitarist, singer, and main songwriter for Silverchair, he has maintained an active career as a solo recording artist, composer, and collaborator across diverse musical projects.

Early Breakthrough with Silverchair

Born in 1979, Johns formed a band with school friends Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou at age 12, originally calling the group The Innocent Criminals. Their trajectory shifted at age 15 when a demo for their song Tomorrow won an SBS television competition. This success led to a deal with Sony Music in 1994 and the release of their debut album Frogstomp in 1995. The band continued with albums including Freak Show, Neon Ballroom, Diorama, and the 2007 record Young Modern, until announcing an indefinite hibernation in May 2011.

Collaborative Projects and The Dissociatives

During hiatus periods from Silverchair, Johns explored side projects, most notably The Dissociatives. Working with producer Paul Mac, he released the 2000 EP I Can't Believe It's Not Rock and a self-titled album in 2004. Other collaborative efforts include forming the act Dreams with Luke Steele, releasing the album No One Defeats Us in 2018. Johns has also contributed to work for other artists, including collaborations with Flume, Zhu, What So Not, and The Veronicas.

Composition and Soundtrack Work

Johns has expanded his portfolio into composition and film scoring. In 2012, he partnered with the Australian Chamber Orchestra to create the soundtrack Atlas for a Qantas advertisement. By 2016, he served as musical director for the Netflix series Beat Bugs, arranging Beatles covers and providing vocal performances for specific characters. His film involvement also includes the project My Mind's Own Melody, developed with filmmaker Josh Wakely.

Solo Discography

Johns launched his solo career with the EP Aerial Love and the LP Talk, both released in March 2015. He subsequently released his second solo album, FutureNever, on 22 April 2022. Over the course of his career, he has garnered recognition for his technical contributions to music, including being ranked 18th on Rolling Stone's list of the 25 most underrated guitarists in 2007 and securing 21 ARIA Awards as a member of Silverchair.
