Academic Formation
Born in Berlin in 1966, Huybrechts pursued his undergraduate studies at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin starting in 1985. He completed his Diplom in 1989 under the supervision of Herbert Kurke. His doctoral research followed at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, where he earned his PhD in 1992, again under the guidance of Kurke. His thesis focused on stable vector bundles on algebraic surfaces.

Following his doctoral work, Huybrechts engaged in international academic exchanges, spending time at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1994 and 1995, and at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) in 1996. He earned his Habilitation in 1998 while working as a research assistant at the University of Essen. His career included an academic tenure at the École normale supérieure in 1997 and 1998.
University Appointments
Huybrechts served as a professor at the University of Cologne between 1998 and 2002. Subsequently, he held concurrent positions as a Chargé de Cours at the École polytechnique and as a professor at the University of Paris VII from 2002 to 2005. Since 2005, he has maintained a professorship at the University of Bonn. He is a member of the Academia Europaea and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
Scholarly Output
His published work includes monographs such as The Geometry of Moduli Spaces of Sheaves, co-authored with Manfred Lehn, and Fourier-Mukai Transforms in Algebraic Geometry. In 2004, he authored the introductory text Complex Geometry. He has also collaborated on research regarding the Brauer group of analytic K3 surfaces with Stefan Schröer and contributed to collective volumes on Calabi-Yau manifolds alongside Dominic Joyce and Mark Gross.
