The office of Vice-President of Ivory Coast was vacant until 10 January 2017, when Daniel Kablan Duncan became the first person to hold the newly recreated position. A career civil servant and long-term economic strategist, he navigated several decades of Ivorian governance, holding key ministerial and executive roles under multiple presidential administrations since the early 1990s.
Early Education and Career
Born in 1943 in Ouellé, Duncan pursued his academic training in France. He attended Lycée Montaigne in Bordeaux and continued his studies at the École des Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Lille and the École Supérieure de Commerce in Bordeaux. He earned a bachelor's degree in business engineering from the ICN Business School. Following his education, he returned to his home country in 1970 to begin a career as a civil servant within the Ministry of Economy and Finance. His professional trajectory eventually led him to roles with the International Monetary Fund and the Central Bank of West African States.

Duncan entered national politics in 1990, serving as the Minister of the Economy and Finance until 1993. Following the death of President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, he was appointed Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, holding the office from 1993 to 1999. During this period, he maintained oversight of national economic policies. After a hiatus following a 1999 military coup, he returned to government in 2011 as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He subsequently served a second term as Prime Minister from 2012 to 2017, simultaneously managing the finance and economy portfolios.
Vice Presidency and Legislative Service
Following his election to the National Assembly in December 2016 representing Grand-Bassam, Duncan transitioned to the executive branch. Appointed by President Alassane Ouattara, he served as the Vice-President of Ivory Coast from January 2017 until his resignation took effect in July 2020. During his tenure as Vice-President, he played a central role in the administration following the constitutional reforms of 2016.
