Three Olympic medals highlight the career of Damir Martin, a Croatian rower who first gained international prominence as part of a world-beating quadruple sculls quartet. His transition from team events to the solitary challenge of the single sculls maintained his standing as a consistent podium finisher across multiple Olympic cycles and European championship regattas.
Early life and displacement
Born in Vukovar on 14 July 1988, Martin grew up in a family with a deep tradition in rowing. His parents and grandfather participated in the sport, which was historically significant in his hometown. At age three, the Siege of Vukovar forced him to flee with his mother, Dubravka, and brother, Stanislav, while his father, Boris, remained behind to fight. After periods living in Austria and Germany, the family returned to Zagreb in 1995. Martin spent four years as a swimmer before committing to rowing at age 12, eventually joining the national team at age 17.
