Early Education and Musical Roots
Born in Providence in 1985, Chazelle attended Princeton High School, where he participated in the school's studio band. Chazelle's directorial debut, Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, originated as his senior thesis project at Harvard. Following his move to Los Angeles, he worked as a freelance writer, contributing to projects such as The Last Exorcism Part II and Grand Piano. He pivoted back to directing when he developed Whiplash, a project based on his personal experiences as a student drummer. After a short film version succeeded at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, he secured financing for the feature, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Critical Success and Major Productions
Following the success of Whiplash, Chazelle directed the musical La La Land, which secured fourteen Academy Award nominations and earned him both a BAFTA and an Academy Award for Best Direction in 2017. He subsequently directed First Man in 2018, a biographical drama centered on Neil Armstrong, and the 2022 film Babylon. His work also expanded into television, where he directed the initial episodes of the Netflix miniseries The Eddy.
