Count Anton Alexander von Auersperg

Austrian poet and politician (1806-1876)

The collections titled Spaziergänge eines Wiener Poeten and Schutt, released in 1831 and 1835 respectively, established the literary reputation of Count Anton Alexander von Auersperg by directly challenging the restrictive Metternich regime. Writing under the pseudonym Anastasius Grün, this Austrian aristocrat balanced a life of legislative service with the production of influential political verse during the nineteenth century.

Early Education and Influences

Born in 1806 in Ljubljana, Anton Alexander von Auersperg hailed from the Thurn am Hart branch of the House of Auersperg. He pursued jurisprudence at the universities of Graz and Vienna. During his time in the capital, he formed a long-standing friendship with the poet France Prešeren. This connection to Carniola remained a constant, even as he transitioned into his duties as an Austrian statesman.

Legislative and Political Career

Auersperg began his formal political involvement in 1832 as a member of the Estates of Carniola. His career saw him serve in various capacities, including the Frankfurt Parliament following the 1848 revolutions. In 1860, he joined the enlarged Imperial Diet, followed by his appointment as a life member of the Austrian House of Lords in 1861. Throughout these roles, he maintained a commitment to a centralized German empire, often finding himself at odds with federalist movements.

Literary Contributions and Legacy

While his early 1830 collection Blätter der Liebe displayed traditional lyrical themes, his later work pivoted toward bold realism. Der letzte Ritter, published in 1830, utilized the rhyme structure of the Nibelungenlied to recount the life of Emperor Maximilian I. Beyond his original poetry, he produced significant translations, including Slovene folk songs and English Robin Hood ballads. His collected works were published in Berlin in 1877.
