Early Life and Move to Christiania
Born in Lillesand in 1823, Langaard was the son of Ellevine Ellefsen and sea captain Mads Christian Langaard. He relocated to Christiania, known today as Oslo, in 1841 alongside his brother, Mads Langaard. His brother eventually established the Frydenlunds Brewery A/S, while Conrad pursued interests within the tobacco sector beginning in 1849.

By 1854, Langaard founded his own firm, Conrad Langaard A/S. Under his leadership, the organization successfully scaled its operations from a local factory into a dominant wholesale distributor of tobacco products across the country. Beyond his involvement in the tobacco industry, Langaard maintained significant financial interests as a ship-owner, a position that contributed to his status as one of the wealthiest individuals in Norway during his lifetime.
Personal Life and Succession
Langaard married Henriette Bull in March 1857, and following her death, he married Andrea Serene Jensen in February 1869. Through his son from his first marriage, Rasmus Agerup Langaard, he became the grandfather of the tennis player Conrad Langaard. Following Conrad Langaard’s death in 1897, the management of the firm transitioned to his only son, Rasmus. The legacy of his commercial ventures persists to this day, as the company now operates as a division of the Olav Thon Group.
