Education and Early Practice
Formal training for von der Lippe occurred at the Polytechnische Schule in Hanover, currently known as Leibniz University Hannover, between 1851 and 1853. Following this period, he expanded his technical knowledge through additional study in Darmstadt and Vienna. By 1856, he returned to his home region to launch his practice, soon expanding his operations by opening an office in Stavanger in 1857.

From 1860 until 1870, he served as the building inspector for Stavanger, a role that saw him manage the development of schools, churches, and urban residential designs. His notable works from this era include St. Petri Church and the building known as Sangsalen, both located in Stavanger. Additionally, his reach extended to projects like Vegusdal Church in Birkenes and Villa Snøringsmoen in Lillesand.
The Bergen Years
In 1870, von der Lippe relocated to Bergen to accept a position as building inspector, an appointment he held for three decades until 1900. During the early part of this tenure, specifically between 1873 and 1881, he collaborated with architect Hans Heinrich Jess. After 1881, municipal restrictions limited his capacity to design public buildings solely within the city limits of Bergen. Among his contributions during his career is the design for Villa Lysøen, the residence of Ole Bull located on the island of Lysøya in Os Municipality.
