Phillip Drummond, the wealthy Manhattanite who adopted two boys from Harlem in the long-running sitcom Diff'rent Strokes, was portrayed by the Canadian-American performer Conrad Bain. Theatrical Foundations and War Service
Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1923, Conrad Stafford Bain first engaged with performance during his final year at Western Canada High School. His early training included time at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Following his service in the Canadian Army during World War II, he relocated to New York. In 1946, he obtained naturalized citizenship in the United States, and in 1948, he completed his studies at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Bain established his professional credentials on the New York stage, appearing in a 1956 revival of The Iceman Cometh and the production of Candide. His theater credits continued through the 1960s with roles in Advise and Consent, Hogan's Goat, and The Kitchen. Beyond the stage, he played a critical role in financial advocacy for his peers by serving as the primary organizer and first president of the Actors Federal Credit Union, an organization he helped launch in 1962.
Television and Sitcom Success
His television exposure grew with an early role on the soap opera Dark Shadows. By 1972, he secured the role of Dr. Arthur Harmon on Maude, portraying a conservative foil to the title character. This collaboration with producer Norman Lear transitioned into his most recognizable work as Phillip Drummond in Diff'rent Strokes, airing from 1978 to 1986. Later, he starred in the political comedy Mr. President and made final stage appearances in On Borrowed Time during the early 1990s.
