A 1962 Guggenheim Fellowship provided the foundation for Claudio Naranjo to expand his psychiatric research beyond his native Chile. Over the following decades, he bridged the divide between clinical therapy and spiritual practice, eventually influencing the human potential movement and becoming a prominent figure in the study of transpersonal psychology and gestalt therapy.
Early Career and Research
Born in Valparaíso in 1932, Naranjo studied at the National Conservatory of Music and the University of Chile. After graduating as a medical doctor in 1959, he took a position at the University of Chile. By the early 1960s, his work took him to the United States. He served as a visiting Fulbright scholar at Harvard, where he participated in Gordon Allport’s social psychology seminars. In 1963, he worked as an associate to Raymond Cattell at the Institute of Personality and Ability Testing before moving to Berkeley to engage with the Institute of Personality Assessment and Research.

During the 1960s, Naranjo investigated the use of substances like ibogaine and harmaline in clinical settings, describing them as fantasy-enhancing tools. His research extended to the Amazon River, where he studied yage with indigenous communities under the guidance of Richard Evans Schultes. He authored the first scientific accounts regarding the alkaloids present in these plants. His approach to psychotherapy became increasingly focused on the integration of spiritual traditions, a path that deepened following the loss of his son in 1970.
The Arica School and Enneagram Studies
In 1970, Naranjo began a six-month spiritual retreat in the Atacama Desert with Oscar Ichazo, the founder of the Arica School. This period marked a transition in his work toward contemplative life and the study of personality theory. He later incorporated the Enneagram of Personality into his teachings. His departure from the Arica School and subsequent use of its materials resulted in significant disputes, with the Arica School questioning his authority to teach the curriculum and the origins of his published theories.
Authorship and Later Recognition
Naranjo authored a extensive body of work, including titles such as The One Quest, Character and Neurosis, and The End of Patriarchy. His writing spanned subjects from meditation to the reform of global education. In 2012, Watkins Mind Body Spirit magazine recognized him as one of the 100 most spiritually influential people. In 2018, he received the Orden al Mérito Docente y Cultural Gabriela Mistral. He died in Berkeley in 2019 at the age of 87.
